Bloody Fool For Love: A Spike Prequel by William Ritter
Oh lordy, when I say that I am a Buffy fan I am not even close to meaning "I watched the show a few times and liked it" what I mean is that I am a HUGE Buffy fan! I have watched the show in its entirety at least 3 times, many episodes more than a handful. I LOVE Buffy. My teenage self made websites, read fanfiction and even dabbled in a little writing of it too. (All terrible and gratefully seemingly erased from the internets by now!)
One of my absolute favorite characters (and one I can go on wild tangents for hours about) was Spike. William the Bloody was one of the best characters that I had ever seen on tv. Fans of Buffy fall into two camps..Team Angel or Team Spike..and I'm sure you are guessing which cabin I was sleeping in? Yup! Spike! Angel was boring as dry white toast....and he had bad hair.
Anyway, when I saw this book was about Spike and also a prequel to the show, I immediately bought it. Loved the cover art and of course, started to relive all of my fan girl glory days.
As excited as I was to read it I was also a bit cautious, would it be just your generic fanfic-ish type of story? Would the writer get the characters right? Spike, Drusilla and Darla were three of my fav villains of the show, and I was really hoping that Ritter would do them justice. So did he? Let me tell you what I thought about this book.
My Review:
As I've stated above, I am a huge Buffy fan and Spike was my absolute favorite character. I found his character arc so very interesting and well..he was my first "bad boy" crush. The show itself filled in some of the "blanks" about his past but left plenty out. This book filled in some of those blanks. I do like seeing some of my favorite "villains" from the show getting their own stories. (except you Angel!)
I believe that Ritter has gotten the personalities of the three down perfectly. It's obvious that he's either a fan of the show or has at least done his homework. Spike was perfectly written and I could picture him in my mind as the story unfolds. Drusilla was even properly described and represented. Sometimes people just latch on to her craziness and leave it at that but she was also a very keen predator too. Something Ritter includes in a slick way.
Darla wasn't my absolute favorite character in the show, but Ritter has managed to make her interesting enough (to me) to actually start to like her. She did get more fleshed out in the show as it progressed but I believe that was when she was coming over to the Angel show (which I only watched a bit of and mostly due to Spike's addition to the cast). However, in this book she's great!
This played out in my mind like the Spike show that I always wanted (and was hinted at after the main show ended! Bummed that didn't come about!) It was fun, campy at times, serious at times, and just a blast to read! The "Big Bad" character was interesting and threatening in a proper way. The book was a quick read (for me) and didn't disappoint!
I think if you love the Buffy Universe and especially if you love Spike, you will enjoy this book! I definitely did and recommend it!
I give it a 4 out of 5 rating!
